Livable Cities

"Demographers predict that within the next 40 years world population will continue to grow" (Robertson, 208).

In order to be able to live comfortably without any issues, we need to be able to make cities more sustainable. This is essential, because cities can only hold so many people while still being livable. Liveable cities are now being stretched out into suburbs to hold more individuals and families. We are stretching out livable land into habitats that have previously been untouched by human civilizations. This is dangerous, doing this may wipe out other species, as well as force more human, animal interaction which will be harmful to both humans and animals. When this happens humans can get hurt from these interactions with animals, and then those animals are either relocated, or put down. This can be avoided by making cities more livable by making them more sustainable.

"Transportation consumes 26 percent of the world's energy produced and is responsible for 23 percent of the world's energy related greenhouse gas emissions" (Robertson, 209).

To me the most important part of cities being livable are the amount of resources that are available within walking distance. Having a proper amount of resources available that limit emissions being used include grocery stores, retail stores, pharmacies, clinics, work, and an efficient form of public transportation for everyone in the area to use. This limits individual car usage which then limits emissions. Cities like Los Angeles have terrible pollution problems, this is due to the constant traffic they have in their city. So many people drive and this causes a harmful smog to hover in the air there.

"As cities grow in population, it is important to know where growth will happen" (Robertson, 210).

Cities are going to continue to grow as long as populations continue to grow. It is important that those in charge of mapping growth know where this will occur. This needs to be known because cities have to be able to build more in those growth areas so these parts of the city stay sustainable as well. So that being said, once they know where the growth will occur, they need to figure out where everything will be built and added onto so it does not affect nature much, and is in close enough proximity that cities remain sustainable and livable.
